Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Sarah Lawrence, Montclair State

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's volleyball team turned in a perfect day at a home tri-match, sweeping both Sarah Lawrence College and Montclair State University in a pair of non-conference affairs on Saturday in Baldwin Gym.

In the morning match, the Rangers (12-10) defeated Sarah Lawrence 25-16, 25-15, 25-15 before closing out the day with a 27-25, 25-14, 25-20 win over Montclair State.

Versus Sarah Lawrence, 13 different players entered the match for the Rangers. A balanced attack did the trick, with freshman Abigail Pereira leading the way with a season-high nine kills. Classmates Teeya Desgoutte and Marissa Guajardo added six kills apiece, with Guajardo also serving up four aces. Freshman Emily Shirk, playing her longest outing of the season, passed out 22 assists while sophomore Lauren Gaza posted 12 digs. Sophomore Alyssa Baron contributed a pair of solo blocks.

The Rangers never trailed in the opening set after racing out to a 7-1 lead. The scoreboard read 24-9 before the Gryphons (10-12) put together a late 7-0 run to pull to within single digits.

The second set was close in the early going, but that's when the Rangers broke it open with a 10-2 run.

The final set was also tight in the beginning, but Drew opened up some breathing room with an 11-1 run that made it 18-8. Sarah Lawrence was unable to get closer than six down the stretch.

Against Montclair State, sophomore Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro led the way with 20 kills and just five errors on 59 attempts for a .254 hitting performance. It was the fifth 20-kill match of the season for Camacho-Tenreiro.

Junior Melina Christodoulou added eight kills and a pair of solo blocks for the Rangers while Desgoutte and sophomore Ashley Carkhuff also tallied eight kills. Sophomore Jasmine Butler distributed 36 assists and three aces while Gaza notched 24 digs and four aces.

Drew fell behind 6-2 in the opening set, but quickly climbed back into it, setting the stage for a nip-and-tuck battle the rest of the way. The Red Hawks (11-11) were serving for set point, 24-22, but after a Ranger timeout, Camacho-Tenreiro threw down a crucial kill to keep her team alive. Montclair State was serving for set point again at 25-24, but that's when Carkhuff stepped up for the Rangers. She bookended a 3-0 spurt with a pair of kills to clinch the set and put the Rangers up 1-0.

Drew outscored MSU 12-6 to start the second set, then used a big 7-0 run to take command midway through the set. Butler served on the final points of the spurt, which included two kills apiece from Camacho-Tenreiro and Carkhuff.

The Rangers never trailed in the final set, but it was close until a 9-3 run gave them a 19-13 lead. The Red Hawks would not get closer than four down the stretch.

Drew returns to Landmark Conference action on Wednesday, when it hosts Susquehanna University at 7 p.m.
