Lloyd’s Late Goals Lift Field Hockey Over Juniata

MADISON, N.J. – Junior Maxine Lloyd scored two goals in the fourth quarter and the Drew University field hockey team earned a 2-1 Landmark Conference (LC) victory over Juniata College on Saturday in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (6-8, 2-4 LC) won their second game in a row while capturing their first victory over the Eagles (2-13, 1-5 LC) since 2013.

It was a scoreless game through three quarters before Lloyd converted twice over a four-minute span midway through the final period for her first career multi-goal performance. It remained a 2-0 game until the Eagles scored in the final minute.

The Rangers controlled possession in the opening half, when they outshot the Eagles 8-0. However, Juniata keeper Brittney McMullen stopped five shots to keep the hosts at bay.

The Eagles found their offense in the third quarter, when they outshot Drew 4-1. However, that's when junior Olyvia Jackson made three of her saves.

The Rangers broke through with just under nine minutes left. Sophomore Janelle Arch controlled a loose ball high out of the air, then passed it to classmate Tyler Olivio near midfield. Olivio took the ball and outraced a defender down the right sideline before making a long cross into the circle, where Lloyd backhanded it just inside the left post and into the back of the cage.

Drew padded its lead with just over four minutes remaining. Shortly following a restart, senior Trisha Dominick fired a long centering pass to the top of the circle. Senior Alexa Thomas controlled the pass, then pushed it around a defender and into open space for Lloyd, who sent a one-timer past an oncoming McMullin for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The Eagles made it a one-goal game with just under a minute to play when Skyler Stevens redirected a shot following a corner. But the Rangers would not allow another shot the rest of the way.

Jackson finished with five saves while McMullin turned aside seven shots for Juniata.

The Rangers outshot the Eagles 13-7 for the game while Juniata held a 10-9 edge in corners.

Drew plays its final home game of the season on Tuesday, when it takes Lancaster Bible in a non-conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
