MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore libero
Lauren Gaza became the first player in Drew University women's volleyball history to reach 1,000 career digs as the Rangers swept past Moravian University for their first Landmark Conference (LC) victory of the season Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers (16-11, 1-4 LC) won by scores of 25-11, 26-24, 25-23.
Gaza hauled in 31 digs for the night to break her own school record for a three-set match that she set last season with 28 versus Baruch. She now has 1,001 career digs for the Rangers, who are competing in their second year as a varsity program.
Offensively, sophomore
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro fired up 15 kills and four aces for the Rangers while junior
Leila Ksiyer totaled 12 terminations to go with three blocks. Ksiyer committed just one error and hit .423 for the night. Junior
Melina Christodoulou posted nine kills and only one error while hitting .444, and sophomore
Jasmine Butler notched a double-double of 33 assists and 16 digs.
Jenna Deegan led the Greyhounds (11-13, 1-4 LC) with 12 kills.
It was a tight match in the early going before Drew opened up some breathing room with a 10-1 run that gave it 14-7 lead. The Rangers led 15-11 before catching fire down the stretch, ending the set on a 10-0 outburst. Camacho-Tenreiro served on the final nine points of the run.
After scooping nine digs in the opener, Gaza racked up 12 in a tight second set. The Rangers raced out to a quick start, leading 8-2, before Moravian used a 6-2 spurt to make it a 10-8 match. The visitors eventually tied the match at 20-all before taking the lead at 22-21. However, that's when Drew received a big kill from Ksiyer and an ace from Camacho-Tenreiro to go back on top, 23-22. The score would be tied two more times, the last coming at 24-24, before freshman
Teeya Desgoutte threw down back-to-back kills to end the set.
Moravian outscored the Rangers 6-3 to start the final set, which would become a back-and-forth affair that featured seven ties and four lead changes. The Greyhounds led by as much as five when they went up 15-10, prompting a Drew timeout. The Rangers responded with a 4-0 run before Moravian called its own timeout. Neither side would lead by more than three down the stretch.
An ace from Desgoutte put the Rangers up 21-18, but Moravian came back to tie at 22-22 and 23-23. However, Camacho-Tenreiro put a ribbon on the night with a kill and an ace.
Drew closes out the regular season on Saturday, when it takes on Elizabethtown College at 1:30 p.m. and Goucher College at 4 p.m. in a pair of Landmark Conference matches at Susquehanna University.
