MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore
Tino Puentes scored a late game-winning goal as the Drew University men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 victory over Susquehanna University at a sunny Ranger Stadium Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, the Rangers closed out the regular season with a 12-2-4 record and a 2-2-3 mark in Landmark Conference play. With nine points, Drew finished tied with Moravian University for fifth place in the conference standings and just one point behind the University of Scranton for the fourth and final spot in the Landmark Conference championship tournament.
Drew's eight seniors were honored in a ceremony before the start of the game, and all eight appeared in the starting lineup.
Puentes' game-winner was his career.
Senior
Calum Erlenborn collected three saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season for the Rangers.
Drew outshot the River Hawks 18-8 for the game, including 8-4 in the opening half. Senior
Kyle Bethel put on a header on frame in the eighth minute, but it was stopped by Tony Burns, who also turned aside a shot from junior
Matthew Agudelo in the 17th minute.
The Rangers continued to control possession in the second half, when it outshot Susquehanna 10-4. However, Burns saved all four shots he faced over the opening 37 minutes of the period. Erlenborn was just as impressive, however, posting all three of his saves during the same stretch.
In the 86th minute, freshman
Jared Brown set up Drew's goal with a cross from the right wing that was deflected off Burns and a defender in the right side of the box. Puentes was there to drill in a left-footed shot just inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season.
Burns saved the final shot on goal of the night in the 89th minute and finished with seven saves for the River Hawks, who closed out the season 2-12-3 and 0-6-1 in the conference.
Though the Rangers did not qualify for the Landmark Conference Championships, they will hope for a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Championships. Drew has appeared in each of the first two NCAA Division III Region V rankings, which are used to select at-large participants in the NCAA Championships. Drew was ranked fifth in the latest NCAA regional rankings. The field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 7 on NCAA.com.
