MADISON, N.J. – Susquehanna University scored in the 21st minute and the River Hawks edged the Drew University women's soccer team 1-0 in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
The two sides entered the match already locked in as opponents in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Championships on Tuesday. But with its victory, Susquehanna (14-4, 6-1 LC) secured the No. 2 seed and home field advantage.
Cierra Getz scored on the first shot on goal of the game for Susquehanna, ranked seventh in the most recent NCAA Division III and United Soccer Coaches Region V polls. Following a free kick, Getz controlled a loose ball at the top of the 18 and drilled a shot in the back right corner to give SU all the scoring it would need.
The Rangers (10-5-2, 4-2-1 LC) threatened over the remainder of the half, firing off four shots on goal, including two from sophomore
Alexa Krause. But Carlie Marquette made four saves to keep it a 1-0 game at halftime.
Marquette stopped another Krause offering in the 49th minute before sophomore
Amina Cirkiel made a tremendous save two and a half minutes later. Cirkiel, who entered the game at the start of the half, left her feet to make a diving stop on a blast from Delaney Morton, who had a wide-open look from five yards out.
Cirkiel made another stop nearly eight minutes later to keep the Rangers within striking distance.
Drew managed three shots on frame over the final 15 minutes but were unable to dent Marquette, who finished with eight saves to earn the shutout.
Krause led Drew with four shots for the game, including three on goal.
The Rangers and River Hawks will kick off at 7 p.m. in their Landmark Conference semifinal on Tuesday. It will mark just the second postseason matchup between the two sides; they also met in the 2009 Landmark semifinals, which resulted in a scoreless draw. But Susquehanna advanced on penalty kicks. Drew will be making its first postseaso playoff appearance since 2014.
