MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team netted a pair of goals in the second half to account for all of the scoring, as the Rangers picked up a 2-0 shutout win over visiting Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday.
Drew (10-1-1) returns to Landmark Conference play on Saturday, hosting Moravian at 2:00 p.m.
Both teams played tight defense in the opening half with only five shots combined on goal. Drew's best chance came midway through the frame when
Christian Tyson fired a low shot from inside the penalty area that Scarlet Raider goalie Christian Andrach smothered.
The visitors countered in the closing minutes with Ranger keeper
Calum Erlenborn coming up big. He punched a shot from Rutgers-Newark's Jake Milne over the crossbar and then collected Joe Alba's header on the ensuing corner kick with just over three minutes left in the half.
In the second stanza, the hosts got on the scoreboard taking advantage of a team goal.
James Cahill had his header saved, but the rebound went into the net on a failed clearing attempt by a defender. The goal came just 3:37 into the period.
Moments later, Drew nearly doubled the lead as
Kevin Kiernan's shot beat Andrach, but a Scarlet Raider stepped in to block the bid.
The Rangers did get an insurance goal on a penalty kick with 13:44 on the clock. Kiernan directed the shot into the lower-right corner for his team-leading ninth tally of the season.
Drew's defense did a good job the rest of the way keeping the Scarlet Raiders from getting off any quality shots from inside the penalty area to secure the team's fourth shutout of the season.
Erlenborn finished with six saves for the Rangers, while Andrach had three for Rutgers-Newark.
Drew had plenty of success against teams from the New Jersey Athletic Conference this fall, going 3-0 in those contests.
