MADISON, N.J. – The Drew women's soccer team secured a valuable Landmark Conference victory, as the Rangers earned a 2-1 triumph over visiting Moravian on Saturday.
The Rangers (7-3-2, 2-0-1) continue conference play on Wednesday, heading to Scranton for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
Drew held a territorial edge in the opening stages and that resulted in a goal in the 17th minute.
Isabella Grof-Tisza carried the ball into the penalty area on the right side and put a cross along the top of the crease.
Rebecca Racine charged the net and touched the ball inside the left post for her sixth tally of the fall.
The Rangers doubled the advantage late in the frame after a long ball by
Emma Shatel deep into Moravian's half of the field.
Kat Kugler won the ball from a defender and sent a short pass to
Alexa Krause, who used her left foot to bury a shot under the crossbar for her conference-leading 10th goal of the season. That score came with 5:11 left in the opening frame.
The hosts had a number of chances to add to their lead in the second frame, with Krause getting a pair within seconds of each other. With just over 38 minutes on the clock, she turned the corner on a defender on the right side and got a low shot that Greyhound goalie Payce Korpics kicked away. Krause quickly gathered the rebound and fired a shot off the near post.
The visitors pulled to within a goal with 6:56 remaining, as Cori Pursel hit a shot into the upper-right corner of the net with an assist from Emma Lenthe.
The Ranger defense held its ground the rest of the way, marking the 10th time this season the team has held the opposition to one goal or less. Drew's
Anthi Panayides made two saves in the opening half, while
Amina Cirkiel had one stop in the final 45 minutes.
Drew held a 21-7 advantage in shots and each team took two corner kicks.
