Rangers Win Rose City Classic On Late Free Throw

MADISON, N.J. – Drew's Madelyn Morgan sank a free throw with 6.8 seconds remaining to lift the Rangers to a 57-56 victory over Western New England on Saturday in the title game of the 2022 Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Classic. It marks the third-straight crown for Drew in the tournament

Drew's Joey Meyers was named the tournament MVP with a 23-point performance in the championship contest while earning spots on the all-tournament team were Morgan, WNE's Caitlyn Hunt and Abby Garaban, Penn State Lehigh Valley's Jah'nel Oliver and Widener's Jordan D'Ambrosio.

Next up for Drew (3-0) is a home contest with Saint Elizabeth on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.

The Rangers got off to a fast start in the opening quarter, netting the first nine points of the contest. Meyers capped that run with a three-pointer off a feed from Gwen Alberici. Drew's biggest lead came at 17-4 when Katrina Wojtowicz knocked down a trey. The hosts led 17-8 after 10 minutes of play.

The Golden Bears made a push in the second stanza to knot the score at 22-22 on a fast-break lay-up by Shaina Cooney. The Rangers countered with a 5-0 burst with Morgan converting from behind the three-point arc and Alberici turning a steal into a lay-up. Drew went on to carry a 30-26 lead into halftime.

In the third stanza, the Rangers extended the lead in double digits to take a 49-39 advantage into the final frame.

The Golden Bears slowly chipped away and eventually closed the gap to 53-52. Drew's Jamie Struble came up with a huge blocked shot in the final minute and the Rangers got two free throws from Meyers to lead 55-52 with 28 seconds remaining. WNE knotted the score at 56-56 on a lay-up by Hunt with 8.3 ticks on the clock, before Morgan clinched the 57-56 final moments later from the charity stripe.

In addition to the big game by Meyers, Alberici had a balanced effort with 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, while Morgan had 11 points and three boards.
