Rangers Ground Eagles 84-57 In Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew's men's basketball team never trailed in its home opener against Saint Elizabeth, as the Rangers cruised to an 84-57 victory on Tuesday.

Drew (2-1) returns to the court on Saturday, hosting Baruch at 4:00 p.m.

The Rangers led from the start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a pair of free throws by Malcolm Newman and a lay-up by Michael Kane. Holding an 18-13 lead midway through the frame, the hosts went on a 9-0 run to gain control. Kane fueled the burst scoring seven of those points to put the lead at 27-13.

Drew extended the lead to 32-15 with just under five minutes on the clock following a bucket by Ras Fisher and three straight foul shots from Andrew TurcoJames Anderson added to the lead at the final horn, draining a three-pointer off a feed from Dante Harward for a 42-24 cushion.

In the second half, the hosts pushed the margin to 20-plus points on several occasions. Drew held a sizable lead at 53-30 when Papie Roberts hit a jumper with 16:02 on the clock.

St. Elizabeth used a modest 7-2 run, highlighted by a conventional three-point play by Pierre Harden to trim the difference to 58-40 with 12:48 remaining. The visitors later closed to within 64-52, but a 10-1 spurt over the span of 3:34 quickly solidified the lead for the Rangers at 21 points. The final margin (84-57) was the largest of the game with David Musial making a lay-up to close the scoring in the last minute.

For Drew, Kane led all players with a career-high 23 points on 8-16 shooting from the floor, including a 4-8 effort from three-point range. Turco also had a career-best with 20 points, while Roberts and Anderson each netted nine. Musial had a balanced performance with eight points, 10 rebounds, a game-high six assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

As a team, the Rangers shot a near-perfect 18-19 from the foul line.

D'Angelo Blackmond just missed a double-double for the Eagles with 14 points and nine boards.
