Meyers Scores 1,000th Point as Rangers Down John Jay

MADISON, N.J. – Senior guard Joey Meyers scored her 1,000th career point, and the Drew University women's basketball team rolled to a 55-35 victory over John Jay College in a non-conference match-up Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (5-1) never trailed and broke open the game in the second quarter, when they outscored the Bloodhounds 18-5. Drew held John Jay to 19.7% shooting for the game.

Meyers entered the game with 999 points and reached her milestone with her first bucket of the game, dropping in a lay-up with 8:39 on the clock. She became the 14th player in team history to achieve the feat and the second in as many years, as Erin Frederick C'22 scored her 1,000th point in last year's season opener.

Meyers finished the game with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists while senior guard Gwen Alberici contributed a season-high 15 points to go with five assists. Junior forward Gracie Hezel scored eight points while senior forward Jamie Struble chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Freshman forward Gianna Pica added seven points for the Rangers.

Katie Healy led John Jay (4-2) with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Meyers' bucket kicked off an 8-0 Drew run to open the game. However, the Bloohounds came back with a 9-1 run to make it a 12-9 game at the end of the first quarter.

The Rangers answered with their decisive second quarter, starting with a 6-0 spurt to open the period. After a John Jay basket, Drew answered with a 10-0 run to push the lead to 28-11. Pica hit a jumper with 1:05 on the clock to make it a 30-14 game at the break.

The hosts continued to pour it on in the third quarter, when it opened the stanza on a 13-1 run to make it 43-15. The 'Hounds cut the gap to 43-25 by the end of the period, but they were unable to get closer than 15 in the final quarter.

The Rangers are back in Baldwin Gym on Sunday, when they take on Saint Joseph's-Brooklyn at 4 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
