Women’s Basketball Shoots Past St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's basketball team raced out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back, earning a 93-55 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's-Brooklyn Sunday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

Drew (6-1) was red-hot from 3-point range, making 15 of 31 shots from beyond the arc while coming within one triple of the school record.

The Rangers also tied the fourth-highest scoring output in team history and posted their highest point total since a 95-31 win over Pratt on Dec. 3, 2019. In addition, the team distributed 29 assists, which ranks fifth in program history and the most since it tied the school record with 32 in a victory over Goucher on Jan. 6, 2018.

All 15 Rangers who dressed for the game scored at least two points. Senior guard Joey Meyers and freshman guard Madelyn Morgan led the way with 12 points and four assists apiece, with Meyers also draining a career-high four 3-pointers on five attempts. Freshman guard Ryane Wood also had a hot hand from the outside, tallying 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Gwen Alberici contributed 10 points for Drew, which improved to 5-0 at home, while junior forward Jamie Struble totaled a career-high five steals.

The Rangers shot 46.6% from the field – their second-best mark of the year – and a season-best 48.4% from 3-point territory while going a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line.

Emma Kiley paced the Bears (2-3) with 15 points, four assists, and four blocked shots.

Meyers came out on fire right from the start and shot 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the team's decisive early run. Meanwhile, the Rangers kept St. Joseph's off the scoreboard until a lay-up made it 21-2 with 3:23 left in the first quarter.

Senior guard Kyra Mann ended the quarter with a nifty play, making a steal before racing it up the court and knocking down a floater at the buzzer to give the Rangers a 28-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Drew continued to pour it on in the second quarter, outscoring the Bears 15-2 over the opening five and a half minutes as its lead swelled to 43-11. The Rangers also hit a hot stretch late in the quarter, hitting four 3-pointers over a four-minute stretch, including Wood's first trey of the night that made it 51-13 with 1:05 showing. Drew carried a 53-16 lead into the break.

The Rangers stretched their lead to as much as 43 (60-17) with 6:40 left in the third period and led 72-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

St. Joseph's got hot in the final stanza, when it connected on four 3-pointers. However, the Rangers knocked down a trio of 3s themselves, including two from Wood.

Drew picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it travels to Juniata College for its Landmark Conference opener starting at 2 p.m.
