MADISON, N.J. - Four different Rangers scored in double figures and the Drew University men's basketball team cruised to a 72-42 non-conference victory over Lycoming College Sunday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
Senior forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Rangers (5-1), who won their fourth game in a row. Junior guard
Andrew Turco added 15 points while senior forward
Michael Kane notched 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard
Papie Roberts contributed 11 points and five assists.
DeAundre Manuel posted seven points and eight rebounds for the Warriors (3-3).
The game marked the final outing between the two sides as a non-conference opponents for the foreseeable future, as Lycoming will join the Landmark Conference next season along with Wilkes University.
The Rangers trailed briefly in the early going before using a 14-0 run midway through the opening half to take control. Roberts kicked off the spurt with an and-1 fastbreak layup with 13:46 on the clock that tied the game at 10-10. Turco and Kane drilled back-to-back 3-pointers before sophomore forward
Dante Harward canned a jumper to make it 18-10. Turco capped the outburst with an and-1 of his own as Drew's lead ballooned to 21-10 with 10:16 on the clock.
Lycoming stemmed the rally with a 3-pointer, but junior guard
James Anderson dropped in a lay-up and the Rangers would lead by at least double figures the rest of the way.
Drew continued to pull away late in the half and closed the period on an 8-1 run, which included four points from McBurnie, two from Harward, and two from Turco to make it a 35-17 game at the half.
A triple from Roberts a minute into the second half pushed Drew's lead over 20 (38-17). The Rangers settled any doubt midway through the stanza, as a 7-0 surge gave the hosts a 63-38 surplus with 4:52 remaining. Turco and McBurnie each hit jumpers during the spurt before Turco drained a 3-pointer.
Drew ended the game on a high note as well, scoring the final six points on a jumper from senior
Kyle Cassidy, a free throw from freshman
Anthony Tancredi, and a 3-pointer from sophomore
Basim Horshaw.
The Rangers are back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Brooklyn College at 7:15 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
