LA PLUME, Pa. – The Drew University men's basketball team jumped out to a big halftime lead, then held off a late rally as the Rangers defeated host Keystone College 75-68 in its final regular-season non-conference game of the year Friday evening.
The starting five enjoyed a big night for Drew (8-4), scoring all but two of the team's points. Senior forward
Michael Kane led the way, scoring 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Senior forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. also turned in a strong showing with 14 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, a mark that also places him in a tie for 10th-most in team history.
Junior guard
Andrew Turco contributed with 18 points while shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range and handing out a career-high five assists. Sophomore guard
Papie Roberts and junior guard
James Anderson pitched in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Daivel Jackson led the Giants (4-7) with 23 points and 18 rebounds while Jack Anderson netted 22 points.
Playing for the first time in 13 days, the Rangers earned their first-ever win over Keystone after the Giants captured the first two meetings. The two sides were meeting for the first time since Dec. 16, 2011.
The Rangers never trailed after outscoring Keystone 22-8 to start the game. The Giants pulled to within three with 6:20 on the clock, but that's when Drew exploded with a 20-5 run to end the period. Turco helped fuel the outburst with three consecutive 3-pointers in less than two minutes, and the Rangers led 47-29 at the break.
Anderson knocked down a triple on Drew's first possession of the second half to give the team its largest lead of the night. The Rangers still led by 19 with 7:17 remaining, but that's when the Giants used a 12-2 run to pull within single digits (69-60) with 3:36 left.
A 3-pointer from Jack Anderson made it a two-possession game with 1:24 to go, but Turco answered with a pair of big free throws with 58 seconds left. Anderson would connect again from distance to pull Keystone within five (73-68) with 41 ticks showing, but those would turn out to be Keystone's final points of the game. Turco and freshman forward
David Musial each split a pair of free throws to set the final score.
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 7, when they host Susquehanna University at 4 p.m. in a rematch of last year's conference championship game.
