HOBOKEN, N.J. -Â The Drew University baseball team was unable to recover from an early deficit and was defeated 16-3 by the Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-conference matchup on Saturday.
With today's loss, the Rangers close out the first month of the 2022 season at 1-4, while the Ducks improve to 4-2.
JuniorsÂ
K.J. Hallgren andÂ
Jake Welsh collected two hits apiece to lead Drew at the plate whileÂ
Dallas Lorenzetti and
Stefon Johnson slugged one double each.
The Rangers struck first when Lorenzetti doubled to left in the top of the second to bring home Hallgren. This was both the first hit and first RBI of Lorenzetti's career.
Stevens would answer with two runs in each of the next four innings to assume a 4-1 lead. But in the top of the fifth, Hallgren (2-for-3) came up with two men on and no outs and promptly smacked an RBI-single to left. However, the hosts responded with another two-spot in the fourth, the start of a 12-0 run that broke the game open.
In the top of the ninth, freshmanÂ
Jake Bilheimer also notched the first hit and RBI of his career for the Rangers when he drilled a pinch-hit single to right.
Designated hitter Hunter Silvernail finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Ducks.
Senior
Teddy Hoxie started on the mound and worked 3 1/3 innings while absorbing the loss. Classmate
Tim Jinks came on to throw 3 2/3 innings of relief, striking out five. Freshman
Tom Wilkie pitched the final inning for Drew, striking out two.
The Rangers will now have a week-long hiatus before packing their bags and heading down south for an eight-game stint in Fort Pierce, Fla. Their first matchup will be with Wilkes University on Monday, March 7 at 11:30 am.
