FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Drew University baseball team carried a 5-0 lead into the ninth inning, but that's when Wilkes scored 11 runs and the Rangers lost by a final of 11-5 in their spring break opener on Monday.
Senior
Teddy Hoxie was tremendous over the first eight frames for Drew, blanking the undefeated Colonels (6-0) while yielding just four hits and no walks and striking out four. He faced the first five batters of the ninth before exiting with one out and the Rangers leading 5-2. Wilkes went on to score another nine runs versus two Drew relievers and sent a total of 15 batters to the plate.
The Rangers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Justin Cece and an RBI-single from junior
Jake Welsh. Drew would tack on single runs in three straight innings from the fifth through the seventh, including an RBI-single from junior
K.J. Hallgren. Sophomore
Joey Del Sol highlighted Drew's seventh inning, leading off with his first career triple before scoring one batter later on another sac fly from Cece.
Del Sol finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Cece collected three RBIs.
The Rangers (1-5) continue their six-game southern swing on Tuesday, when they take on Norwich in a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m.
