MADISON, N.J. - Senior
Hailey Simmons and sophomore
Lizzy Barrett posted five goals and two assists apiece and the Drew University women's lacrosse team kicked off its 2022 season with a 17-11 non-conference victory over Vassar College Saturday afternoon in a sunny and cold Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers opened the game on a 5-0 run and never looked back, as the Brewers were unable to draw closer than three the rest of the way.
Sophomore
Emma DiPatri added two goals and three assists for Drew while seniors
Meliha Emini and
Kendall Hartt tallied two goals and one assist apiece.
Making her second collegiate start, junior
Anna Horne made 11 saves and picked up five ground balls for the Rangers.
Ashley Roberts recorded three goals and two assists for Vassar.
Barrett struck for three of her team's first five goals, but the Brewers answered with a pair of tallies to make it a 5-2 game at the end of the first quarter.
Simmons kicked off a six-goal second quarter for the Rangers when she struck for the first two goals of the period. Drew would go on to outscore Vassar 6-3 in the quarter to open up an 11-5 lead at the half.
The Rangers outscored the Brewers 5-2 to open the second half as their lead ballooned to nine (16-7) with 8:45 left. Vassar refused to go quietly, however, ending the game on a 4-1 spurt, but it was too little too late.
Drew continues its season on Wednesday, when it hosts DeSales University in a non-conference match-up at 5 p.m.
