2021-22 All-Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Team
MADISON, N.J. - Three members of the Drew University men's basketball team have been selected to the All-Landmark Conference Team, it was announced on Tuesday.
Junior forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. earned a spot on the first team while senior guard
David Gervase and sophomore guard
Malcolm Newman each captured second-team recognition.
The trio helped the Rangers put together another outstanding season in 2021-22, as the Blue and Green finished 18-9 and 11-3 in Landmark Conference play to finish second in the conference standings. Making its fifth-straight conference tournament appearance, the team went on to earn a dramatic 60-58, come-from-behind win over Catholic in the semifinals to earn the Rangers' third Landmark championship game berth in the last four years.
Drew's three all-conference selections tied Susquehanna for the most among all Landmark teams. It also ties the program record set last season for the most All-Landmark Conference honors.
McBurnie garnered First-Team All-Landmark Conference honors for the second year in a row after a stellar campaign in which he averaged a double-double of 13.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game to go with 35 blocked shots. Among the Landmark Conference leaders, he ranks first in rebounding, second in blocks, and 10th in scoring. He also ranks 10th in Division III in double-doubles (17) and 18th in rebounding. Midway through the season, he was named the MVP of the DeSales Tournament after posting 18 points and 17 rebounds versus Hood and 16 points and 11 boards in a victory over DeSales, which was undefeated and nationally ranked at the time, in the championship game. He also scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a win over Elizabethtown. In his brightest moment of the season, McBurnie converted an and-1 lay-up with 1.4 seconds left to give the Rangers the victory in their big win over Catholic. The bucket capped a 21-0 rally in the last five minutes from Drew, wiping out a 19-point deficit while earning a spot on ESPN's SportsCenter the following morning.
Gervase also earned All-Landmark recognition for the second straight season after capturing first-team accolades a year ago. He finished as Drew's top scorer for the season, averaging 15.0 points per game, while leading the team in 3-pointers made (70) and free-throw percentage (81.6%). He is the conference leader in 3s made, and he also ranks fourth in free-throw percentage and sixth in scoring. He posted eight 20-point games throughout the season, including a career-high 29-point performance in a victory over Moravian in which he shot 7-for-10 from 3-point land. Gervase also scored 26 points and went 8-for-8 at the foul line in the Landmark Conference championship game at Susquehanna. Earlier this season, he was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for the second year in a row.
Newman gained his first All-Landmark Conference award in his first full season as a starter, finishing fourth on the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game. The point guard also led the squad with 3.5 assists per night, a mark that ranks fourth in the Landmark Conference. A two-time Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, Newman scored a career-high 26 points in a victory at Scranton, and he also netted 23 points in a win over Moravian. In addition, Newman scored 21 points in a victory at Rutgers-Newark and handed out seven assists in three different games.
