FORT MYERS, Fla. - Two days after breaking the school record for the best start in program history, the Drew University softball team lost its first game of the season 5-1 to Kenyon College on Thursday before quickly rebounding to a 12-2 victory over New Jersey City University just two hours later. Game two ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The Rangers are now 9-1 to start their season with two games left to play in their Florida Spring Break trip.
In game one, Drew's usually potent offense was held to one run which came on a double steal attempt in the top of the fifth. Senior outfielder
Julia Sinatra successfully beat the throw home while Kenyon's attention was on junior outfielder
Molly O'Brien who was heading for second.
Junior pitcher
Bailey Comeau was in the circle for Drew, ultimately going six innings and striking out three.
Game two featured the much more explosive offense the Rangers have been showcasing this past week.
Drew struck first by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore first baseman
Madi Baldwin got things started with an opposite field single to drive in the first run of the game, before scoring two batters later on an NJCU fielding error. Later in the inning, sophomore outfielder
Francesca Laurito drove in a pair with a base hit to center.
The Rangers added another four runs in the third after loading the bases on an NJCU fielding error. Senior outfielder
Madi Precht was hit by a pitch to force in the first run, followed by Laurito scoring on a wild pitch before O'Brien capped off the rally with a two-run single to left field.
In her second start of the season, junior pitcher
Brianna Seals earned the win for Drew after five strong innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out a pair.
The Rangers will close out their time in Florida tomorrow with a game against Rockford University at 9 a.m. followed by a matchup with West Connecticut State University at 11 a.m.
