FORT MYERS, Fla. - On the final day of its already record-setting Florida Spring Break trip, the Drew University Softball team triumphed over Rockford University 9-1, before topping Western Connecticut State University 10-3 on Friday. Game one ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The Rangers are now 11-1 to start their season after going 9-1 during their time in Florida. Overall, while in Florida Drew outscored its opponents by a combined score of 97-22.
Game one featured a gutsy pitching performance from junior ace
Bailey Comeau. Less than 24 hours since her last start, she pitched a complete game gem, allowing just one run and striking out eight. In the first inning, she struck out the side to work around a couple of baserunners, before getting out of a bases loaded jam in the second without surrendering a run.
On offense, senior outfielder
Madi Precht and junior outfielder
Molly O'Brien got things started with a bit of small ball, each recording a bunt hit and scoring the first two runs of the game.
The Rangers were then buoyed by a massive fourth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Senior infielder
Ciara Lyons drove in the first run with a single up the middle. O'Brien then added two more with line drive to center. A few batters later, the Rangers loaded the bases and proceeded to add a couple more runs after freshman catcher
Delaney O'Donoghue was hit by a pitch and sophomore outfielder
Francesca Laurito walked.
In game two, Precht and O'Brien again started things off by recording back-to-back bunt hits, with WestConn misplaying O'Brien's and ultimately allowing both Rangers to score on a ball hit only a couple of feet from home plate. Precht would come up to bat again later in the inning, driving in another run with a single to left.
The star of game two though was freshman pitcher
Teagan Bradley, who dominated both sides of the game. At the plate, she went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run, while in the circle she allowed one earned run and struck out eight over seven superb innings.
With their time in Florida now at a close, the Rangers will head home and return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Kean University in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
