Softball Edged Twice at Kean

UNION, N.J. - The Drew University softball team dropped a pair of close decisions at Kean University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.

The Cougars (11-3) rallied for a 5-3 victory in the first game, then topped the Rangers 4-1 in the nightcap.

Drew (11-3) jumped to a 3-1 lead after 2 1/2 innings in a slugfest of an opener, which included a combined four home runs. Sophomore Madi Baldwin put the Rangers on the scoreboard with an RBI-single in the first before freshman Francesca O'Kleasky made it a 2-0 game with her second homer of the season, a solo blast in the second. After Kean scored once in the bottom of the second, junior Molly O'Brien walloped her second long ball of the year in the third to put Drew up 3-1.

The Cougars came back with a pair of homers of their own in the bottom half with a solo shot and a three-run dinger for what turned out to be the final runs of the game.

Junior Bailey Comeau started in the circle for the Rangers and worked three innings before giving way to classmate Brianna Seals, who spun three shutout innings. She allowed just two hits and one walk.

Senior Madi Precht and O'Brien collected two hits apiece for Drew.

In the second game, Kean scored all four of its runs from the second through the fourth versus freshman starter Teagan Bradley. The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the fifth, when O'Brien singled before eventually scoring on a single from Baldwin. However, the Cougars would allow just one baserunner the rest of the way.

Bradley pitched all six innings for the Rangers, striking out two and walking none. O'Brien led the Rangers at the plate, going 3-for-3, while Bradley also collected a pair of hits.

The Blue and Green pick up their schedule on Saturday, when they host Catholic University at 1 p.m. in their Landmark Conference opener.
