MADISON, N.J. - Junior
Molly O'Brien drilled a walk-off, three-run homer in the second game of the Drew University softball team's home and Landmark Conference-opening doubleheader on Sunday at the Drew Softball Complex, lifting the Rangers to a 5-3 victory.
With the win, Drew (12-4, 1-1 LC) came away with a split for the day, as the Cardinals won the opener 3-2.
The Rangers trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap before freshman
Delaney O'Donoghue sparked the comeback with a single through the left side. With two outs, senior
Madi Precht just beat out an infield single on a ball that deflected off the pitcher's glove and to the shortstop to keep the game alive. Then on a 1-0 pitch, O'Brien launched her third homer of the season, easily clearing the rightfield fence with an opposite-field blast.
With the win, the Rangers captured just their second victory over Catholic in program history and their first since a 10-1 win in Madison on March 29, 2008.
Freshman
Teagan Bradley enjoyed a strong all-around performance for Drew in the second game. In the circle, she tossed a six-hit complete game while striking out a season-high nine batters without issuing a walk. At the plate, she finished 2-for-3 and also drilled a two-run homer in the first inning that tied the game at 2-2.
Catholic (6-4, 1-1 LC) never trailed the entire game before O'Brien's shot. The Rangers slugged four home runs on the day.
In the opener, the Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the second inning to go up 1-0. However, junior pitcher
Bailey Comeau would blank Catholic over the next four innings and was the beneficiary of some stellar defense. Senior rightfielderÂ
Renata Primmer threw out a runner at first while Precht, the team's centerfielder, gunned down a runner trying to score from second to end the fifth inning.
Freshman
Francesca O'Kleasky tied it up for the Rangers with a solo homer in the fourth - her third dinger of the year. But Catholic answered with two runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to go up 3-1.Â
Drew would rally in the bottom of the inning, however, starting with a leadoff homer from Perry. Then with two outs, Precht ripped a double down the leftfield line, but starting pitcher Katie Hurd struck out the final batter of the game to earn the win.
Perry and Primmer each finished 2-for-3 in the opener. Comeau went the distance and struck out five.
In the second game, Catholic's Makayla Czan led off the game with a home run before the Cardinals plated a second run in the inning to go up 2-0. But the Rangers answered quickly in the bottom of the frame when O'Brien singled and Bradley connected for her long ball to make it 2-2.
The two sides would combine for just one run over the next five innings - a solo homer from Catholic's Sammy Phillips in the third inning that put the visitors up 3-2. But Bradley settled in after that and retired 12 of the last 15 batters she faced, including the last five.Â
Bradley, O'Brien, and O'Donoghue all finished with two hits in the second game.
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Montclair State University starting at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
