Softball Sweeps Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Drew University softball team continued its torrid early start, sweeping a doubleheader at Montclair State University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Rangers (14-4) cruised to a 10-4 victory in the opener before capturing the nightcap 1-0 on the strength of a four-hit shutout from freshman Teagan Bradley.

Senior centerfielder Madi Precht finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs in the first game, but made perhaps the play of the game with an all-out diving catch on a sinking line drive in the right-center gap to squash a late Red Hawk rally.

Drew broke it open early with a six-run, five-hit second that made it 6-0, then pushed its lead into double digits with a four-run sixth.

In the meantime, junior Bailey Comeau blanked MSU over the first five innings. The hosts rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, however, and were still threatening when the bases were loaded with two outs before Precht made her web gem.

Senior Ciara Lyons finished 2-for-3 with two runs for the Rangers while senior Renata Primmer, Bradley, and freshman Delaney O'Donoghue all doubled. Comeau went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits while striking out five while improving to 5-3.

The second game featured a pitcher's duel between Bradley and MSU's Kayla Volante. The scoreboard still read 0-0 after five innings before the Rangers broke through in the top of the sixth, when junior Molly O'Brien led off with a single. She went on to steal both second and third before scoring on a single to center from Primmer.

It turned out to be enough offense for Bradley, who worked around a baserunner in every inning, including a two-out triple in the second.

The Hawks put the tying run in scoring position in the seventh following a leadoff single and a fielder's choice, but Bradley induced a lineout to right to end the game. She is now 6-1 on the season.

Bradley walked just one and reached a season-high strikeout total for the second straight start, fanning 10.

The Rangers are scheduled to host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
