Baseball Topped by Wilkes

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Drew University baseball team lost by a final of 5-1 to Wilkes University on the next-to-last day of the squad's spring break trip to Florida.

The Rangers scored once in the first inning, but were unable to add to that total as a pair of Colonel pitchers tossed eight shutout innings the rest of the way.

Sophomore Jake Schoffelen was a bright spot for Drew coming out of the bullpen, firing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three.

In the first, freshman Dallas Lorenzetti led off the game with a single to right before junior K.J. Hallgren was hit by a pitch. Senior Cole Bosch followed up with a bunt single, and Lorenzetti went on to score on a fielder's choice from freshman Matt Myers to put the Rangers up 1-0.

Freshman starter Johnny Jarvie worked out of trouble in the bottom of the inning for Drew. After a pair of hit batsmen and an error loaded the bases with one out, he induced an inning-ending 6-3 double play.

Wilkes tied it in the third before breaking through with a three-run fourth. The Colonels got a leadoff home run, then plated two more on a trio of singles.

Schoffelen came on to start the fifth inning and struck out two batters in a row to end the inning. In the sixth, he was the beneficiary of Hallgren throwing out a runner attempting to steal, and he capped his stellar appearance by fanning his last batter.

The Colonels tacked on one run in the eighth to set the final score.

Aiden Murphy tossed six innings for Wilkes and struck out 10 while picking up the win. Sawyer Kemp pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the save.

Drew concludes its trip on Saturday, when it takes on Geneva College at 10 a.m.
