Baseball Downs Geneva in Florida Finale

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Senior Teddy Hoxie fired five scoreless innings and the Drew University baseball team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with an 11-1 seven-inning victory over Geneva College Saturday morning.

Hoxie (3-1) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before yielding a one-out single. He finished with six strikeouts in his second straight impressive start. In the team's spring break opener on Monday, he carried a shutout into the ninth inning versus Wilkes University.

Seven starters batted safely for the Rangers, including junior K.J. Hallgren, who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, and senior Cole Bosch, who was 2-for-3 with two runs. Freshman Matt Myers collected three RBIs while classmate Dallas Lorenzetti scored three runs.

The Rangers posted their second-highest scoring output of the season and plated a run in four of the six innings in which they hit.

Drew jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, getting a sacrifice fly from Myers and an RBI-groundout from sophomore Joey Del Sol.

The Rangers pushed across three more runs in the second, starting with an RBI-single from freshman Zahir McNeil. Two more would score on a throwing error from the catcher during a double steal and a wild pitch.

The Blue and Green put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth. The Rangers had only one hit in the inning but were the recipients of two walks and two hit batsmen. Bosch worked a bases-loaded walk before Myers lofted his second sac fly of the game. Del Sol then grounded in another run before junior Anthony Diaz capped the inning with an RBI-single.

In the meantime, Hoxie was in command, allowing just two baserunners in the opening four innings - a hit batter in the first and a walk in the third - while racking up five of his Ks.

Geneva loaded the bases with a walk and two singles in the fifth. But Hoxie escaped with a groundout.

Drew scored its final two runs in a three-hit sixth, capped by a sacrifice fly from freshman Mike Borrelli.

Freshman Tom Wilkie tossed the sixth inning for the Rangers and yielded one run before sophomore Owen Jaquette worked a scoreless seventh.

Drew continues its season next Saturday, when it opens Landmark Conference play with a doubleheader at Catholic University starting at noon.
