Catholic Takes Two from Baseball in Landmark Opener

WASHINGTON, DC - The Drew University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Catholic University in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday.

The Cardinals won the opener 18-3 before capturing a 14-10 decision in the nightcap.

In the opener, Catholic assumed a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Rangers made it a 5-2 game in the top of the third, but the Cardinals answered with another four-spot in the fourth to open up a 10-2 lead.

Freshman Ryan Jones led Drew at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double. First-year Dallas Lorenzetti finished 2-for-4 while classmate Mike Gallaro also slugged a two-bagger. Senior Tim Jinks started and worked three innings while striking out six.

Catholic jumped on top in the nightcap as well, outscoring the Rangers 7-0 over the first three innings. Drew would put up a rally, however, scoring six times in the fourth on four hits, two errors, a walk, and a hit batsman to make it a one-run game. But the Cardinals answered two innings later, scoring five times in the fifth to go up 12-6.

Jones enjoyed another big outing in the second game, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored as Drew posted its second-highest hit total (14) of the season. Sophomore Joey Del Sol finished 2-for-2 with a double while senior Cole Bosch went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Freshman Kenny Yonker started on the mound for the Rangers and struck out four over three innings.

The two teams conclude the series on Sunday with a single game starting at noon back at Catholic.
