Women's Lacrosse Falls to Moravian in Landmark Opener

MADISON, N.J. - After keeping things close throughout the first half, the Drew University women's lacrosse team was outscored 10-4 over the final two quarters and Moravian University handed the Rangers a 19-10 setback in Drew's Landmark Conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium    .
The Rangers drop to 6-2 overall while the Greyhounds get back to .500 at 4-4.

Despite the loss, the Rangers still put up a strong offensive showing with four different players scoring two goals each: senior midfielder Meliha Emini, senior attacker Hailey Simmons, senior attacker Jenna Draney, and sophomore midfielder Ella Champigny. Emini also finished with two assists and eight draw controls, giving her 100 for her career.

After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, Draney and Emini scored back-to-back goals in under two minutes to briefly even things up. At 9:09, sophomore attacker Emma DiPatri corralled the ball behind Moravian's net and passed it over the goal to Draney who immediately fired the one-timer through three Greyhounds to get Drew on the board. Then, at 7:57, Emini barreled through the entire Moravian defense to get within a few feet of the goal before shooting one past the overstepped goalie. After the Greyhounds retook the lead, Emini again evened things up by taking advantage of a turnover to make it a 3-3 game at 5:02 in the first.

Halfway through the second period, the Rangers again scored back-to-back goals in quick succession, this time with Champigny and Simmons scoring at 8:37 and 7:17, respectively. After picking up a ground ball and helping to clear it, Champigny caught a pass from Emini right in front of the net and beat the goalie to the left side. Ninety seconds later, Simmons would fight off multiple Greyhounds to score on a highly-contested shot in front of the net to make it 7-5. The two sides then traded goals and Moravian led 8-6 at the half.

The Rangers trailed just 9-7 after Simmons struck again less than a minute into the second half, but that's when the 'Hounds reeled off a 7-0 run to break it open.

Junior goalkeeper Anna Horne registered 12 saves over 42 minutes for the Rangers while senior Katiana Michalski stopped five shots over the final 18 minutes in her season debut.

The Rangers will be back in action on Wednesday, when they head down the road to face FDU-Florham in a non-conference match.
