MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's lacrosse team traveled down the street to renew its rivalry with FDU-Florham on Wednesday afternoon. But after playing the Devils to a tie through the first quarter, FDU went on to prevail 25-15 in the non-conference match-up.
The two sides were playing for the first since 2019, as the COVID-19 pandemic kept the two teams from meeting in each of the last two years.
Senior
Hailey Simmons posted four goals and two assists to lead the Rangers (6-3) while sophomore
Lizzy Barrett also netted four goals. Senior
Jenna Draney notched two goals and one assist, and senior
Kendall Hartt contributed two goals and five draw controls. Junior
Anna Horne collected 12 saves.
Katie Walsh led the Devils (6-1) with seven goals, one assist, and 10 draw controls.
The Rangers led 2-1 after Simmons assisted on a goal from Draney, then scored herself less than a minute later. Hartt and Barrett each scored later in the quarter to make it a 4-4 game after one period of play.
Simmons and Hartt struck again early in the second quarter before senior
Meliha Emini and Barrett posted back-to-back tallies to draw the Rangers to within 9-8 with 3:50 left in the opening half. FDU scored the final two goals of the half to make it an 11-8 game at the intermission.
Drew still trailed by only three (12-9) after Barrett scored her third goal of the game with 10:45 left, but that's when the Devils ran off four unanswered tallies to open up a seven-goal lead with 5:29 left in the third quarter. Consecutive goals from sophomore
Emma DiPatri and Barrett and a tally from junior
Maggie Nealley with 13:17 left in the game narrowed the deficit to five (18-13), but that's when the hosts broke it open with a 7-0 run. Simmons set the final score with the game's final two goals.
The Rangers resume their Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday, when they visit Elizabethtown College starting at 1 p.m.
