TCNJ Takes Two from Softball

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University softball team took on a tough TCNJ squad on Wednesday and was turned back twice in a non-conference doubleheader at the Drew Softball Complex.

The Lions (12-3) won 5-3 in eight innings in the opener before capturing a 9-1, five-inning victory in the nightcap.

The Rangers (15-7) led 2-0 after three innings of play in the opener. Senior Renata Primmer drove in both runs for Drew via a groundout in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third.

TCNJ pulled even on a three-run homer in the fourth, but freshman starter Teagan Bradley would blank the Lions over the next three innings. Drew threatened to win it in the bottom of the seventh, when senior Ciara Lyons reached on an infield single and classmate Madi Precht was hit with a pitch. The go-ahead run was at third after a double steal, but TCNJ escaped with a groundout and flyout.

The visitors pushed across two runs on two hits in the top of the eighth, when the international tiebreaker rules came into effect, then worked a three-up, three-down eighth to end the game.

Freshman Delaney O'Donoghue went 2-for-4 to lead the Rangers at the plate while junior Molly O'Brien and senior Paxtan Perry each ripped a double.

Bradley worked the complete game for Drew, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out two.

The Lions jumped on top early in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the second versus junior starter Brianna Seals before breaking it open with a six-run fourth. The Rangers were held to two hits and no runs through the first four innings before pushing across a run in the fifth, when Perry singled before scoring a double from sophomore Madi Baldwin

Seals pitched the first three innings before giving way to junior Bailey Comeau, who tossed the last two innings.

The Rangers pick up their Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday, when they visit the University of Scranton at 1 p.m.
