Softball Starts Florida Trip 2-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Drew University softball team opened up its spring break trip to Florida with an offensive showcase that included an 11-0 win against the Rochester Institute of Technology in its opener and a 20-7 victory over Elms College in game two. Both games were ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Rangers pushed their record to 4-0, marking the team's best start since 2018.

Game one was highlighted by an offensive barrage in the top of the second when Drew put up a seven spot as 10 Rangers came to the plate. The first five batters all reached base safely, including senior first baseman Paxtan Perry, who doubled in the first run of the rally, and sophomore outfielder Francesca Laurito, who drove in a pair with a single up the middle.

Two innings later, junior outfielder Molly O'Brien showed off her speed when she hustled all the way around the base paths for a little league home run after RIT's right fielder misplayed her fly ball.

Ultimately, the Rangers registered 10 hits against RIT, while six different players recorded an RBI.

In the circle, junior Brianna Seals tossed her second career shutout, going five scoreless and allowing just two hits all day. She also racked up five strikeouts, including back-to-back Ks to end the second.

Game two saw the Rangers put up another massive second-inning rally, this time scoring eight runs and sending 13 batters to the plate. Senior outfielder Renata Primmer drove in the first two runs of the inning after smoking a double to right field. A few batters later, another senior outfielder Madi Precht had the biggest hit of the day with a three-run inside-the-park home run to make it a 6-0 ballgame.

Drew would add four more runs in the third after some great heads-up base running by freshman first baseman Teagan Bradley, who scored on an error by Elms' shortstop. Precht, who reached on the prior error, then came in and had quite a journey around the bases; stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and finally coming home on a successful double-steal attempt.

The Rangers had another big inning in the fourth, adding seven more runs to their lead. Precht drove in two more with a double, giving her a team-best five RBIs on the day. Senior shortstop MaKayla Sosa then brought Precht home with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze before crossing home plate herself moments later after freshman second baseman Francesca O'Kleasky smacked a double to left.

Overall, Drew recorded 15 hits in game two, with eight different players driving in a run.

Not to be forgotten amongst all the offense was junior pitcher Bailey Comeau, who notched her second win of the season after firing three no-hit innings and totaling six strikeouts.

The Rangers are back in action tomorrow for another two-game set when they take on Martin Luther College at 11 a.m. and New Jersey City University at 1 p.m.
