Softball Remains Undefeated Through Six Games

FORT MYERS, Fla - The Drew University softball team continued its remarkable early season run on Monday when it defeated Martin Luther College 16-3 and New Jersey City University 8-0. Both games ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Rangers are now at 6-0 to begin the season, tying the 1996 and 1992 teams for the best start in program history.

Game one was business as usual for Drew's high-powered offense as all nine starters reached base safely at least once.

In the top of the first, sophomore catcher Madi Baldwin, senior outfielder Renata Primmer and senior first baseman Paxtan Perry knocked in consecutive runs to give Drew the early 3-0 lead. Primmer also led the team in hits, going a perfect 3-for-3.

The Rangers added another six runs in the second inning after their first seven batters all reached safely, including junior outfielder Molly O'Brien, who crushed a two-run shot over the center field fence. She would finish the game with a team-leading four RBIs.

The next inning, the first seven Rangers again made it safely on base. Five of them got on via a walk, with senior third baseman Ciara Lyons drawing two in this inning alone. Three Rangers wound up scoring on either a passed ball or wild pitch.

Freshman pitcher Tyler Saunders earned the win in her first career start, going four innings and allowing just two earned runs.

Then in game two, despite the intrusion of a roughly 30-minute rain delay in the middle of the game, the Rangers didn't miss a step and cruised to the shutout victory thanks to another strong outing from freshman pitcher Teagan Bradley. The rookie tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits while striking out five.

Baldwin led Drew's offense with two RBIs after driving in a pair with a double in the third. Senior outfielder Madi Precht also had an impressive game, going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs.

The Rangers return to the diamond tomorrow for another two-game set, starting with Albion College at 9:00 a.m. followed by the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 11:00 a.m.
