Softball Moves to 8-0, Breaks Team Record for Best Start

FORT MYERS, Fla. - One day after tying the school record for the best start to a season with six straight wins, the Drew University softball team came out Tuesday and shut out Albion College 7-0 to break the record before doing it again with a 3-1 victory over the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford.

With the team's second win of the day, Drew Head Coach Erica Mehalick earned her 200th career coaching victory. She has now led the Rangers to 43 wins after collecting 157 victories at Stevens.

At 8-0 to start their season, the Rangers have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 74-17, good for an average of 9.25 runs per game.

Game one saw Drew complete its third shutout victory of the year behind another incredible outing from their ace pitcher, junior Bailey Comeau. Through seven shutout innings, she allowed only two hits and no walks while striking out a whopping 11 batters - the second-highest total of her career.

The Rangers' bats more than backed up Comeau's efforts, scoring all seven runs from the third through the fifth innings. Senior outfielder Madi Precht got the ball rolling in the third after laying down a perfect bunt on the the third-base line that that was thrown away, allowing her to come all the way home on a ball hit just a few feet from home plate.

Senior third baseman Ciara Lyons would be Drew's leading scorer in game one, driving in a pair and scoring two runs herself.

In game two, freshman pitcher Teagan Bradley took the circle and earned her third win of the season after tossing a one-run, complete-game gem. She scattered five hits and one walk across seven innings, striking out three in the process.

Senior outfielder Renata Primmer was the majority of Drew's offense against Pitt-Bradford, scoring on a wild pitch in the second and driving in Bradley with a single to center in the third.

The Rangers will look to continue their historic win streak on Thursday when they take on Kenyon College at 9 a.m. before having a rematch with New Jersey City University at 11 a.m.
