MADISON, N.J. - In a game that featured a one-hour lightning delay, Rutgers-Newark pulled away late to hand the Rangers a 5-0 setback on Thursday at the Drew Softball Complex. Due to weather and time constraints, the second game of the doubleheader was canceled.
Despite the loss, the Rangers still hold an impressive 18-9 record, while the Scarlet Raiders get back to .500 at 10-10.
Up until the delay in the bottom of the fifth, the game was completely deadlocked due to fantastic pitching from both teams. Junior
Bailey Comeau got the start for the Rangers and went four shutout innings, allowing only three hits and striking out five. She did run into some trouble in the second after loading the bases with two outs, but cut the rally short as she snagged a come-backer to close out the inning. Then in the fourth, after striking out back-to-back batters, Comeau surrendered a double to put runners on second and third. However, she managed to shut down the rally again by catching the batter looking for the final out of her day.
Freshman
Teagan Bradley relieved Comeau in the fifth and pitched the remainder of the game. After throwing a scoreless fifth, she would end up having to wait over an hour before getting to return to the circle, ultimately surrendering five runs while notching two strikeouts.
In the end it was Jackie Lara who earned the win for Rutgers-Newark after tossing a complete-game one-hitter. Senior third baseman
Paxtan Perry accounted for Drew's lone hit with a single to left in the bottom of the second.
The Rangers will return to the field tomorrow at 3 p.m., when they host Moravian University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Senior Day.
