BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Moravian University won both ends of a Landmark Conference doubleheader versus the Rangers on Saturday.
The Greyhounds won the opener 8-4 before capturing the nightcap 11-7.
Freshman
Dallas Lorenzetti enjoyed a big day at the plate for Drew, finishing 5-for-7, while senior
Shane Benson, sophomore
Joey Del Sol, freshman
Ryan Jones, and junior
K.J. Hallgren belted three hits apiece.Â
In the opener, the Rangers backed starting pitcher
Teddy Hoxie with a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. FreshmanÂ
Matt Myers doubled and scored in the second before Hallgren singled home a run in the third.
Moravian tied it up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth before the Rangers made it a 4-3 game in the top of the fifth on an RBI-double from Benson. But the hosts went on to score the next six runs, including a four-run seventh, to build an 8-3 lead.
Hallgren led the Rangers at the plate in the opener, finishing 2-for-4 with a double. Lorenzetti also collected a pair of hits.
Hoxie ended up pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) while striking out three. Freshman
Kyle Lavoie threw the final 1 1/3 innings, yielding just one hit while fanning one.
The Greyhounds also pulled away late in the nightcap after it was a back-and-forth affair in the early going. Drew tied its second-highest hit total of the season with 15 in the game.
The Rangers trailed 2-0 after the first but scored in the top of the second on an RBI-single from Lorenzetti. Moravian came back with three in the third to make it 5-1, but Lorenzetti singled home another run in the fourth. After the hosts scored once in the bottom of the inning, Drew answered with the next three runs in the top of the sixth to draw to within 6-5. Jones and junior
Anthony Diaz each had an RBI-single in the inning.
Moravian rallied again, scoring three in the bottom of the sixth to go up 9-5. The Rangers made it a two-run game when freshman
Mike Gallaro went deep for a two-run homer, the first long ball of his career, but they would turn out to be the team's final runs of the day. Moravian tacked on a single run in the seventh and eighth to set the final score.
Lorenzetti finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the nightcap while Gallaro went 2-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs. Jones went 2-for-5 with a double while Diaz, Benson, and Del Sol also went 2-for-5.
Junior
Nick Pellegrino started on the mound for Drew and pitched six innings before freshman
Alex Barbarisi tossed the final two innings.
Drew returns to the field on Wednesday, when it hosts The City College of New York in a non-conference game starting at 3:30.
