Baseball Scores 19 in Win Over CCNY

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University baseball team opened up its final homestand of the season with a bang as the Rangers exploded offensively to beat the City College of New York 19-1 in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference game at Doc Young Field. This is the most runs the Rangers have scored in a game since April 7, 2019 when they put up 19 against Muhlenberg College.

A major factor in Drew's offensive showing was a combination of patience at the plate and speed on the base paths as the Rangers recorded a school-record 15 walks against the Beavers while also stealing four bases and taking advantage of nine wild pitches.

On the mound, junior Giovanni DeGiglio earned the win after pitching six dominant innings in which he allowed only a single and an unearned run while striking out a career-high nine batters, including fanning the side in the third. Junior Joseph Caggiano, freshman Tom Wilkie and junior Jake Welsh each pitched a shutout inning in relief.

From the beginning, the Rangers were nearly unstoppable at the plate as the first 10 batters all reached base safely to start the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Cole Bosch was the first to score, coming home on a wild pitch, followed by a bases-loaded walk by freshman outfielder Ryan Jones and a fielder's choice from freshman first baseman Matt Myers that wound up scoring two after a CCNY throwing error. Then, sophomore outfielder Justin Cece was the first to record an RBI with a hit after he roped a two-run double down the left field line. Bosch, in his second at-bat of the inning, brought Cece home with a single to left, before junior second baseman Anthony Diaz capped off the eight-run rally with a sac fly.

The Rangers had another big rally in the bottom of the fifth when they plated five more runs to give them a 14-0 lead at that point. With two outs and runners on second and third, junior catcher K.J. Hallgren drove in both with a bullet up the middle. Two batters later, Jones brought in Hallgren on an infield hit that just barely stayed fair, followed by Myers who drove in two more runs with a single to center.

Drew wasn't done yet, however, as the Rangers plated four more runs the next inning. Hallgren struck first after he was hit by a pitch for the third time of the afternoon, this time with the bases loaded. Senior outfielder Shane Benson immediately followed this up with a two-run double to left, before Hallgren scored his team-leading fourth run of the day on a groundout from Jones.

Hallgren ultimately reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances with one hit, one walk and three hit batsmen. Benson, Jones and Myers finished the day with three RBIs each, while Diaz scored three runs.

The Rangers will be back in action this Saturday when they host Juniata College in a Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
