Juniata Sweeps Rangers in Landmark Doubleheader

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader versus Juniata College to start its final Landmark Conference series of the year on Saturday at Doc Young Field.

The Eagles won the opener 10-3 before capturing a 6-0 decision in the nightcap.

The Rangers led 3-1 in the first game following a three-run third inning. Junior K.J. Hallgren singled home a run to make it 1-1 before junior Anthony Diaz managed to score from second on a bunt single from senior Shane Benson. Freshman Matt Myers then chased home the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, junior Nick Pellegrino shut out Juniata from the second through the fourth innings after the Eagles scored a run in the first. However, the visitors tied it up with two in the fifth before going ahead for good on a two-run homer from Aaron Bollinger in the sixth.Juniata padded it lead with three in the seventh and two in the ninth.

Hallgren finished 2-for-4 in the opener while Pellegrino pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs. Dominic Goodenough came on to pitch two innings of relief before freshman Jordan Hanes tossed one inning.

In the second game, the Eagles edged in front 2-0 versus starting pitcher Tim Jinks with single runs in the third and fifth before breaking it open on a three-run homer from Dakota Snyder in the sixth.

In the meantime, starting pitcher Jack Johnson allowed just two baserunners for Juniata through the first seven innings. After senior Cole Bosch singled leading off the first, Johnson retired 16 in a row before issuing a sixth-inning walk to sophomore Justin Cece.

The Rangers appeared to have something going in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with no outs after freshman Ryan Jones bunted his way on and Myers reached on an error. But Johnson went on to strike out the side, then pitched the ninth to finish with a two-hit shutout.

Jinks worked 5 1/3 innings, striking out six, while freshman Connor Ruscansky threw the final 3 2/3.

The two teams close out the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
