Baseball Takes Final Game of the Series from Juniata

MADISON, N.J. - Backed by a lights-out performance from freshman starting pitcher Kenny Yonker, the Drew University baseball team held Juniata College in check as it cruised to a 3-1 victory in the final game of its three-game Landmark Conference series on Sunday at Doc Young Field.

Playing their final Landmark Conference game of the season, the Rangers earned their first victory over the Eagles since March 31, 2019.

On the mound, Yonker was almost perfect. Through seven strong innings (a career high), the only blemish on his final line was an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning. After that, he completely shut out the Eagles for the next six innings, notching six strikeouts overall. He also registered the first pick-off of his career when he nabbed a runner at first in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Owen Jaquette earned his first career save after throwing two shutout innings in relief. He came on to start the eighth and stranded a pair of runners on the corners. Then in the ninth, after hitting the leadoff batter, he escaped once again, striking out a batter before inducing a 6-3 game-ending double play,

At the plate, senior left fielder Shane Benson (2-for-2) and freshman center fielder Ryan Jones (2-for-3) provided all of Drew's offense on the day. In the bottom of the sixth, Benson lined a double down the left field line to score junior catcher K.J. Hallgren. Jones then brought home Benson with a line drive up the middle to give Drew a 2-1 lead. Two innings later, Benson again found himself on second after singling to left and advancing on an error by the left fielder and again Jones drove him in, this time with a double down the left field line.

The Rangers close out their season with three home games this week, starting on Tuesday with a non-conference matchup with local rival Saint Elizabeth University at 3:30 p.m.
