Baseball Beats Crosstown Rival Saint Elizabeth

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University baseball team won its second game in a row on Tuesday afternoon when it topped Saint Elizabeth University 7-1 in a non-conference game at Doc Young Field.

Junior starting pitcher Giovanni DeGiglio threw an absolute gem for the Rangers, going seven strong innings and holding the Eagles to only one run on four hits. The lone run scored against him came on a solo homer the seventh from Joe Brong. Apart from that one hiccup, DeGiglio completely stifled Saint Elizabeth's offense, retiring six straight batters before the home run and only allowing one hit from the third through the sixth innings.

Freshman reliever Dominic Goodenough came in after DeGiglio and closed out the game for Drew with two shutout innings.

Junior second baseman Anthony Diaz went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs to lead the Rangers at the plate while sophomore right fielder Justin Cece also collected a pair of hits.

On offense, the Rangers' batters showed excellent plate discipline and were able to consistently get on base all day, drawing nine walks and plating six runs through the first six innings. They opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first after loading the bases before junior catcher K.J. Hallgren scored on a wild pitch. The next inning, the Rangers again had runners in scoring position when senior shortstop Cole Bosch knocked a sac fly to right field before Cece scored on a wild pitch one batter later.

In the bottom of the fourth, Bosch scored his first run of the day on a deep single to left from Diaz. Two innings later, in his next at bat, Diaz would have the biggest hit of the day as he lined one to dead center and legged out a triple to drive in Bosch for the second time of the game. A few batters earlier, freshman third baseman Dallas Lorenzetti scored the Rangers' third run of the day on a ball that got passed the catcher. Lorenzetti would drive in Drew's final run of the game in the eighth when he launched a fly ball to left field for a sac fly.

The Rangers will return to the field one last time this season on Sunday, when they host Rosemont College in a non-conference double header starting at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
