Baseball Closes Season With Sweep of Rosemont

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University baseball team closed its 2022 on a high note, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Rosemont College on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Doc Young Field.

The Rangers captured the opener 9-4, then erupted for a 22-1 victory in the nightcap.

With the wins, Drew closes out the season on a four-game winning streak.

All five Ranger seniors made their presence felt on Sunday, including Cole Bosch, who finished the twinbill 5-for-6 with five runs and four RBIs.

In the opener, the Rangers trailed twice but rallied to score the final six runs of the game. Four of Drew's seniors made significant contributions, including Tim Jinks, who tossed five innings to pick up his first career win. He retired five of the last six batters he faced and finished with four strikeouts. Bosch went 2-for-2 with three RBIs while seniors Shane Benson and Justin Melick each drove in a run.

Drew went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Freshman Matt Myers sparked the inning with a one-out double before sophomore Justin Cece bunted his way on. Myers ended up scoring when Melick lofted a sacrifice fly to center and the Ravens threw the ball away attempting to retire Cece at third, allowing him to score as well.

After Rosemont plated one in the third, the Rangers answered with one in the bottom half, when junior K.J. Hallgren tripled home a run.

The Ravens took their only lead of the day with a three-run fourth, making it 4-3. However, Drew came back with two in the bottom of the frame on a walk, an infield single from junior Anthony Diaz, a failed pickoff attempt, and a go-ahead RBI-groundout from Benson.

Junior Nick Pellegrino came in the sixth and worked a three-up, three-down inning before the Rangers tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth, which included a two-run single from freshman Dallas Lorenzetti and an RBI-single from Bosch.

Pellegrino also blanked the Ravens in the seventh to register his first save as a Ranger with a pair of scoreless innings.

Myers and Cece each went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored in the opener.

In the second game, the Rangers scored eight runs in two different innings, including the first, which included six hits and three errors. Cece roped a two-run single in the inning, when 12 batters came to the plate. Benson had an RBI-double while Benson, Lorenzetti, and Bosch drove in one apiece.

Lorenzetti roped a two-out double as part of a three-run fourth before the Rangers put up another 8-spot in the fifth, when 16 batters came to the plate. Junior Jake Welsh drilled a two-run double in the inning while Diaz doubled in three runs.

Drew completed its scoring with a three-run sixth that saw Diaz drive in his fourth run of the game. Senior pitcher Teddy Hoxie also made his first collegiate plate appearance in the inning and drew a walk before eventually coming around to score. He would then enter the game at first base.

In the top of the seventh, Benson, Bosch, Hoxie, and Melick made one final curtain call, when first-year Head Coach Brian Eberly subbed out all four with two outs to go.

Bosch finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs while Lorenzetti was also 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Diaz collected four RBIs on the day while Hallgren and freshman Ryan Jones scored three runs apiece.

On the mound, freshman Johnny Jarvie got the start and fired four innings to earn his first collegiate victory. He scattered five hits and struck out three while allowing his only run on a leadoff homer in the third. Jarvie was the beneficiary of an outfield assist, as Benson threw out a runner at the plate trying to score from second to end the fourth.

Freshman Connor Ruscansky, freshman Tom Wilkie, and Welsh one threw one scoreless inning of relief each for the Rangers.
