Baseball Drops a Pair to Scranton

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University baseball team took on the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference (LC) doubleheader on Saturday at Doc Young Field, and the Royals captured both ends of the doubleheader.

The Royals (15-3-1, 5-2 LC) won the opener 10-5 and the nightcap 11-2.

Scranton jumped to an early lead in the opener, scoring five times on four walks, a hit batsman, and a two-run double. The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the third, when freshman Dallas Lorenzetti led off with a double before eventually coming around to score. Drew added another run in the fourth, when junior Jake Welsh doubled and scored to make it a 5-2 game.

In the meantime, freshman Johnny Jarvie was cruising in relief, blanking the Royals from the second through the sixth innings after entering the game in the first for freshman starter Kenny Yonker. However, Scranton broke it open late, scoring their final five runs over the seventh and eighth versus Jarvie and junior Nick Pellegrino. Jarvie ended up working a season-high six innings, striking out five.

Junior Anthony Diaz finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Drew while sophomore Justin Cece went 2-for-3. Hunter Ralston tossed eight innings to get the win for Scranton.

The Royals also utilized a big early inning in the nightcap, scoring four in the second versus senior starter Tim Jinks. Nick Reposa provided the big blow with a three-run double.

Scranton pushed across an unearned run in the fifth before the Rangers cut into the deficit in the fourth versus starter Daniel Johnson. Welsh got things started with a leadoff double and Drew ended up scoring twice to make it 5-2.

The Royals added a run in the fifth, then broke it open with five runs over the final two innings versus a trio of Ranger relievers.

Jinks pitched the first 5 2/3 innings before sophomore Dominic Goodenough threw 1 1/3 innings. Freshman Tom Wilkie and Jake Bilheimer fired one inning apiece.

Junior K.J. Hallgren, senior Cole Bosch, and Welsh all finished 2-for-4 in the nightcap for Drew.

Johnson pitched seven innings for Scranton, striking out eight while improving to 5-0.

The two teams play their series finale on Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
