Hoxie Sharp in Loss to Scranton

MADISON, N.J. - Facing a tough Scranton offense, senior Teddy Hoxie was dominant through his first six innings before the Royals rallied with a five-run seventh en route to an 8-1 win over the Rangers in the Landmark Conference series finale on Sunday afternoon at Doc Young Field.

The start of the game was delayed by an hour due to a steady rain during the morning.

Hoxie almost completely shut down the Royals' offense through the first six innings. After allowing a solo home run to the second batter of the game, he immediately hunkered down and struck out the final two batters of the inning on just seven pitches. He followed this up with five shutout innings in which he allowed only one more hit while recording five more strikeouts. He flashed his best swing-and-miss stuff in the top of the third when he opened up the inning with back-to-back punch outs on pitches down and away. In the fifth and sixth innings, Hoxie would efficiently retire all six batters he faced, including setting down Scanton's 2-3-4 hitters on just eight pitches in the sixth.

Senior shortstop Cole Bosch tied the game for Drew in in the bottom of the third, driving home junior second baseman Anthony Diaz with a fielder's choice. Diaz walked leading off the inning before moving to third on a single from junior catcher K.J. Hallgren.

Things eventually unraveled for Hoxie and the Rangers in the top of the seventh when five hits, two walks and two hit batsmen enabled Scranton to break through. Hoxie ended the game with seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings pitched.

The Royals also received an impressive performance from their starting pitcher, Thomas Plunkett, who allowed one run and three hits through the first five innings.

Freshman first baseman Matt Myers led the Rangers at the plate, going 2-for-4.

Drew caps off its 11-game homestand this Tuesday, when they host Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference outing.
