Softball Rallies for Game Two Win Over William Paterson

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University softball team scored three late runs to capture the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with William Paterson University on Thursday afternoon at the Drew Softball Complex.

The Pioneers (14-15) won the opener 2-0 despite a two-hit, nine-strikeout performance from junior Bailey Comeau. The Rangers (21-12) came back with a 3-1 game two victory behind a complete-game four-hitter from freshman Teagan Bradley.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, a bunt single from senior Madi Precht proved to be the play of the game. With runners on the corners, Precht beat out a bunt to the right side of the infield, allowing freshman Francesca O'Kleasky to score the go-ahead run from third. But the play was only getting started.

Senior Ciara Lyons moved from first to third on the play, just beating a tag on a throw across the infield, then scored when the throw went to second in an unsuccessful attempt to catch Precht. Lyons then broke for home and slid under a tag before the Pioneers finally ended the inning when the catcher threw out Precht at third, but not before two runs had scored.

In the opener, William Paterson scored the only runs of the game on a two-out error in the first. But Comeau was brilliant over the final six innings when she yielded only a pair of walks in the third. She retired the final 13 batters she faced and finished with nine strikeouts - her second-highest total for the season.

The Pioneers struck first in the second game, scoring on an infield single in the third. But the Rangers pulled even in the fifth, when Lyons and Precht worked back-to-back walks to start the inning and prompt a pitching change. Two batters later, senior Renata Primmer singled in a run to make it a 1-1 game.

Drew's pivotal sixth inning began when O'Kleasky led off with a single to right. She was bunted to second by senior Paxtan Perry before moving to third on a groundout. Lyons followed up with a walk, setting up Precht's go-ahead bunt.

Bradley left on a runner on second in the fourth before firing a pair of three-up, three-down innings. The Pioneers threatened in the seventh, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Bradley struck out a batter to end the game, marking her fourth punch-out of the day.

The Rangers resume their Landmark Conference schedule with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, traveling to Juniata College at 1 p.m. on Saturday before visiting Susquehanna University at the same time on Sunday.
