SELINSGROVE, Pa. - In the final game of the 2022 season, junior
Craig Wilkie scored a goal and an assist to break the Landmark Conference (LC) single-season points record at 87 as the Drew University men's lacrosse team was defeated 14-4 by Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers complete their 2022 season at 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference. That overall record is the team's best since going 13-4 in 2021, while their conference record is their best since 2017 when they went 4-2. Drew finished in a three-way with Susquehanna and Moravian University for fourth place in the conference, but Susquehanna was awarded the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championships due to the third tiebreaker, goal differential among tied teams.
Wilkie, who finished the season with 57 goals and 30 assists, surpassed the former record of 86 points set by Goucher's Kyle Boncaro in 2012. He also finished just two goals shy of the Landmark single-season goals record. In addition, his points and goals totals for the season both rank second in Drew history.
The Rangers got off to a quick start in the opening period, striking just 26 seconds into the game when freshman
Mike DeMayo spun around a defender and buried one in the top right corner of the net. A few minutes later at 9:02, freshman
Brian Windisch caught a one-timer from Wilkie right on the edge of the crease and managed to fire one just past the goalie at point blank range to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
However, this would be the last time the Rangers held the lead as the River Hawks went on to score 11 unanswered goals over parts of the next three quarters. Drew had plenty of chances to score in that span, racking up 29 shots in the first three periods, but Susquehanna goalie Jozef Korpics was more than up to the task, stopping everything the Rangers threw at him and winding up with 21 saves on the day.
The Rangers were eventually able to break through Susquehanna's defense at 13:12 in the fourth period when, with a man advantage, Wilkie sent a laser beam through two defenders and the goalie to get Drew back on the board and tie the conference points record. Two minutes later, with another man advantage, freshman
Charlie Collins charged the overstepped goalie and successfully knocked the ball out of his stick, allowing DeMayo to scoop up the ground ball and easily score on the empty net.
With his two goals today, DeMayo puts the cap on an incredible rookie season that includes 41 goals, 15 assists and 56 points.
As for the Rangers goalies, senior
Anthony Tufaro got the start in the final game of his Drew career, playing just under 40 minutes and making 11 saves. Junior
Yoel Ovadya relieved Tufaro in the third period and played the last 20 minutes of the game, making six saves in the process.
