Strong Offense Powers MLAX to Win Over Juniata

MADISON, N.J. - Behind an offensive barrage that featured a whopping 78 shots (54 on goal), the Drew University men's lacrosse team defeated Juniata College 19-10 in Saturday's Landmark Conference match in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers improve to 8-4 on the season and 2-1 in Landmark Conference play, while the Eagles drop to 1-9 and 0-3 in the conference.

Drew's offense was unrelenting for almost the entirety of the game. After falling behind 2-0 halfway through the first period, the Rangers attack suddenly came alive as they scored four unanswered goals in between 7:39-2:36 and never looked back.

Drew owed much of this success to sophomore GJ Nazziola, who had an absolutely incredible day at the faceoff X, going 23-for-27 and picking up 12 ground balls. With the help of senior Paul Le Pera, the Rangers won 24 faceoffs, tying them for second all-time on the Drew single-game leaderboard.

Nazziola also scored a pair of goals, doubling his career total in a single afternoon. At 7:39 in the first, his first goal came just seven seconds after Juniata had scored. Nazziola was a one-man army, quickly winning the faceoff, picking up the ground ball, and barreling straight through the Eagle defense before firing a laser right past the goalie to get Drew on the board. His second goal came with 4:13 left in the second quarter and kicked off a crucial 9-0 run that put hosts up 16-5 with 3:57 left in the third quarter.

Other top offensive performers included sophomore Brett Spafford, who was Drew's leading scorer with four goals, and freshmen Mike DeMayo and Charlie Collins, who tallied three goals each. The trio accounted for five of the nine goals from the team's unanswered run, including two with a man advantage from Collins.

Freshman Brian Windisch scored Drew's final goal of the day while the Rangers were shorthanded at 6:42 in the fourth. A few seconds after play resumed following the Drew penalty, the Rangers induced a Juniata turnover in front of the goal and cleared the ball down the field, giving Windisch the opportunity to score as he dove around the back of the net and shot one through the five-hole.

Juniata's goalie play prevented further damage, as starter Justin Toney racked up 26 saves while Ryan Madison stopped nine shots.

In goal for the Rangers, senior Anthony Tufaro earned his first career win with an eight-save performance over 55 minutes of play. Freshman Niegel Lightner played the rest of the way and made one stop.

The Rangers are back in action next Saturday at 1 p.m., when they head to Washington, DC for a Landmark Conference tilt with Catholic University.
