MADISON, N.J. – The Drew field hockey team used a big first quarter as the Rangers coasted to a 5-1 home triumph over Neumann on Saturday.
The Rangers (2-2) are back on the field on Wednesday, heading to Stevens for a 7:00 p.m. start.
Drew took control early, tallying three times in the opening 15 minutes and taking all 13 shots.
The initial goal came 1:50 into the contest when
Alexa Thomas poked in a loose ball from right in front of the net. Thomas made it 2-0 less than two minutes later, batting in her own rebound for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The hosts extended the margin to with 53.4 seconds showing on the clock, as
Emily Monaco found the back of the net for her first collegiate tally.
The Rangers carried that 3-0 lead into halftime and then tacked on a fourth goal in the third frame.
Lauren Cagliostro centered the ball from the left side and
Maxine Lloyd redirected it into the Knight cage with 3:10 expired. Neumann's Rachel Koerner scored on her own rebound in the closing minutes to trim the difference to 4-1.
In the final quarter, the Rangers accounted for the only score when
Tyler Olivio made a nice push up the right side. She gained a step on the defender and slid a low shot inside the left post with 2:54 remaining to make the final 5-1.
Olyvia Jackson earned the win in goal for Drew with two saves in 45 minutes of action, while
Bridget Kenny played a scoreless final frame
Drew held a lopsided 27-5 advantage in shots and 22-5 in penalty corners.
