Rangers Hold Off Manhattanville, Remain Unbeaten

MADISON, N.J. – Backed by a pair of first-half goals, the Drew University men's soccer team collected a 2-1 home victory over Manhattanville on Saturday to remain perfect on the season.

The Rangers are 7-0 and off to the program's best start since the 2001 season.

Drew returns to action Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. with a road match at Kean.

The Rangers didn't waste any time taking the lead, opening the scoring an even seven minutes into the contest. Garrett Mironenko served a perfect cross from the left side that a charging Christian Tyson headed into the right side of the net.

The hosts doubled the advantage with 21:17 on the click, as Kevin Kiernan collected a failed clearing attempt by the Valiant goalie and chipped a shot over the Manhattanville defense for his fifth tally of the season.

Drew nearly got the scoreboard again with 10 minutes on the clock on back-to-back bids from close range by Tino Puentes and Ethan Steinbiss, but Valiant keeper Luis Granadas made his two best stops of the frame to keep the difference at two.

Manhattanville had several opportunities in the second half, including a disallowed goal with just over five minutes expired. Ranger goalie Calum Erlenborn made a save on Jostyn Blanco on the goal line with the rebound eventually bouncing in, but the visitors were whistled for offside on the play.

Erlenborn made another key stop on a direct kick from 25 yards by Michael Mezzina, but the Vialants spoiled the shutout with 14:07 remaining when Johnny Antolino tucked a shut under the crossbar following a scramble in front of the net after a corner kick.

In goal for the Rangers, Erlenborn earned a season-high eight saves, while Granadas also finished with eight stops.

Drew held a slim 15-14 edge in shots, but the visitors held an 8-2 margin in corner kicks.
