Drew Falls To FDU-Florham In Season Opener

MADISON, N.J. – Cross-town rival FDU-Florham scored a pair of early goals and never relinquished the lead, as the Devils spoiled the home opener for the Drew University field hockey team with a 5-1 win on Friday in the opening round of the Drew Fall Festival.

The Rangers (0-1) continue the tournament on Saturday, hosting Lycoming at noon, while the Devils (1-0) take on Cabrini at 3:00 p.m.

FDU-Florham struck twice in the opening four minutes of the contest, grabbing a 2-0 lead in a span of 1:58. The Rangers cut that margin in half when Janelle Arch gained possession of the ball on the Devil side of the field. She directed a pass into the arc that Tyler Olivio touched to Maxine Lloyd, who directed a shot on goal that eluded goalie Emily Schlessinger with 3:35 on the clock.

Drew nearly tied the score with just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame, as Lauren Cagliostro had back-to-back bids from the left side. Schlessinger turned away the first chance, while Megan Surgent made a defensive save on the second.

FDU-Florham tallied twice more in the second stanza to carry a 4-1 advantage into halftime.

The teams played a scoreless third quarter with each goalie coming up with a big save. Drew keeper Olyvia Jackson kicked aside a turnaround bid by Rachel McHale, while Schlessinger denied Lloyd from close range.

Haleigh Flukey netted the lone goal of the final quarter, as she flipped in her own rebound for the 5-1 final.

Jackson finished with seven saves for the Rangers, while Schlessinger had four stops for the Devils.

Lauren Nawrotski scored twice for FDU-Florham.
