Late Goals from Thomas Vault Field Hockey

MADISON, N.J. - Senior Alexa Thomas scored twice in the fourth quarter, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending the Drew University field hockey team to its first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Lycoming College on the second and final day of the Drew Fall Festival Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The victory gave first-year Head Coach Summer Washburn her first win at Drew.

The Rangers struck first, when junior Emma Bryer took a pass from sophomore Tyler Olivio and sent it through the 5-hole for her first collegiate goal, making it a 1-0 game with 9:20 left in the second quarter.

Drew held off a late threat from the Warriors, who received back-to-back corners with no time on the clock. The visitors managed to get off a crisp shot on the second attempt, but it was knocked down by junior Jackie Melone for a defensive save.

The Rangers outshot Lycoming 12-1 in the opening half but starting goalie Autumn Shahan made six saves for the Warriors.

After a scoreless third quarter, Lycoming tied it up just 38 seconds into the final stanza when Katie Loughran tipped in a shot following a corner.

The Blue and Green struck back quickly, however. With 12:52 on the clock, sophomore Lauren Cagliostro accepted a corner pass and blasted a shot from the left elbow. Standing in front of the goalie, Thomas backhanded in what held up as the game-winning tally.

Thomas tacked on her second goal with just two seconds left, scoring in front of the cage once again off a feed from senior Trisha Dominick

Junior Olyvia Jackson went the distance in goal for the Rangers and collected three saves, including a pair of potential game-tying shots midway through the fourth quarter.

Isabella Bobe played the second half between the pipes for Lycoming and stopped four shots.

Drew outshot the Warriors 19-6 and held a 15-6 advantage in corners.

The Rangers continue their season next Saturday, when they visit Notre Dame (Md.) at 1 p.m. in a non-conference match-up.
