MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's tennis team competed on the opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Northeast Regional Championship on Friday at the Drew Tennis Complex and the Simon Forum.

Drew is hosting an ITA Regional for the first time in team history and are competing at the event for the first time since 2015. The event serves as a singles and doubles championship for the 72 schools in the Northeast region. The finalists in both singles and doubles qualify for the ITA Cup National Championships.

Three Rangers competed in the championship draws on Friday. In singles, junior Daryl Wong lost 6-2, 7-5 to Siddharth Byreddy of Ramapo while classmate Shivi Perera dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Harry Lyu of Hobart.

In doubles, seniors Bret Schuler and Avi Perera gave Joseph He and Andy Watterson of NYU all they could handle in a tough 8-7 (7) tiebreaker.

In addition, six Rangers competed in the doubles B draw, with each pair playing three matches apiece. Senior John Dickey and junior Jack Polvere earned a victory for Drew, edging a team from The College of New Jersey, 7-6 (7-5). Junior Santo Carroccia and sophomore Sergey Kravchenko nearly came out on top but lost two of their three matches in tiebreakers, falling 7-6 (3) to a team from New Jersey City and 7-6 (1) to a pair from Lebanon Valley.

Also on Thursday, eight Rangers played in the singles C draw versus FDU-Florham and Ramapo. Seniors Leo Ambrogio and Dan Blumenthal each went 4-0 on the day to lead the Blue and Green while Carroccia finished 2-0. Dickey and Kravchenko were both 2-1 while Schuler prevailed in his only match.

Day Two of the tournament will be held on Saturday and include the third round and quarterfinals of the singles main draw and the quarterfinals and semifinals of the doubles main draw. All matches will be held in the Simon Forum in the event of inclement weather.
