Meyers Erupts for 34 as Rangers Win Eighth Straight

MADISON, N.J. – Senior guard Joey Meyers scored a career-high 34 points and the Drew University women's basketball team ran its winning streak to eight with a 59-53 Landmark Conference victory over Susquehanna University on Saturday in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (12-1, 2-0 LC) have now posted their best start in team history through 13 games.

Meyers shot 9-for-17 and 13-for-17 from the free throw line while surpassing her previous career-best by four points. Her 34 points were the seventh-most in school history and the most since Michaela Keegan C'18 scored 36 in a victory at Moravian University on Jan. 10, 2018. In addition, Meyers' 13 free throws made were just one shy of the school record.

Also, Meyers broke into Drew's all-time top-10 scoring list, shooting into ninth while passing both Courtney Stephens C'16 (1,142 points) and Danielle Baraty C'93 (1,146). Meyers has now scored 1,153 points for her career.

Meyers also posted seven rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Madelyn Morgan contributed nine points while senior guard Gwen Alberici notched four assists and three steals coming off the bench.

Julia Pinckert led the River Hawks (5-8, 0-2 LC) with 17 points and seven rebounds while Julia Roth notched 13 points and eight boards.

Susquehanna scored the first four points of the game, but the Rangers used an 8-1 run over a 4:42 stretch to go up 8-5, and they would not trail the rest of the way. Meyers scored seven of Drew's points during the stretch.

The River Hawks tied it at 10-10 with 1:27 on the clock before freshman guard Maddie Beyer nailed a 3-pointer with 13 ticks showing to hand Drew a 13-10 lead after the opening quarter.

Beyer's shot was the start of a 10-3 Ranger spurt that put the hosts up 20-13 with 6:11 left in the second quarter. Meyers carried the Rangers in the period, scoring her team's first 12 points and 13 of the team's 15-point total. She went 1-for-2 at the foul line with 10 seconds left to make it a 28-21 game at the break.

A 3-pointer from Morgan gave the Rangers an eight-point lead (33-25) less than two minutes into the third quarter. However, Susquehanna came back, and a 6-0 run cut the deficit to two (35-33) midway through the stanza.

The River Hawks still trailed by only two in the closing seconds of the quarter, but that's when Morgan completed a conventional 3-point play to put Drew up five (43-38) heading into the final period.

Meyers helped the Rangers pull away in the fourth quarter, when she scored her team's first nine points. After Susquehanna again closed to within two following an old-fashioned 3-point play from Kenzie Selvaggi with 8:02 to go, Meyers scored the game's next seven points to put Drew ahead 50-41 with 4:44 left. She kicked off her single-handed 7-0 run with a deep 3-pointer before hitting both free throws on back-to-back trips to the charity stripe.

Meyers scored her final points on a baseline drive with 3:26 to go to put the hosts up nine before consecutive baskets by Alberici and junior center Gracie Hezel gave the Rangers a comfortable 13-point lead (56-43) with 1:40 remaining. Drew still held a double-digit lead after Alberici went 1-for-2 at the line with 21 ticks showing before the River Hawks hit two late buckets.

The Rangers continue their season on Friday, when they visit Goucher College at 2 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
