SCRANTON, Pa. – The Drew University women's volleyball team battled the University of Scranton in a tight first set but the Royals handed the Rangers a 3-0 setback in Landmark Conference action Tuesday evening.
Scranton, which is tied for the Landmark Conference lead at 5-0, won by scores of 27-25, 25-16, 25-17.
Sophomore
Teeya Desgoutte led the Rangers with seven kills and eight digs while sophomore
Abigail Pereira tallied five kills and six digs. Freshman
Alyssa Rachwal handed out 22 assists, and junior
Lauren Gaza collected 13 digs.
Deanna Whelpley (15) and Stephanie Margolies (14) paced the Royals.
Drew trailed 18-13 in the opening set before rallying to tie it at 19-19. A thrilling finish ensued, and the Rangers came all the way back to take the lead (23-22) on a kill from Desgoutte. The Rangers would tie it on two more occasions on kills from Desgoutte (24-24) and junior
Alyssa Baron (25-25) before Scranton scored the last two points.
The Royals never trailed in either of the last two sets after jumping to early leads.
The Rangers continue their season on Friday, when they visit Moravian University at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
